Akhnoor Fort, Akhnoor

Perched majestically on the right bank of the Chenab River, Akhnoor Fort stands as a sentinel of history, its construction dating back to the early 19th century. The fort's origins can be traced to 1762 AD, when Raja Tegh Singh, an autonomous princely state, commissioned its building to provide sustenance to his people during a devastating famine. For two years, he supplied food to the workers, saving the principality from ruin. His son, Alam Singh, completed the fort in 1802.
The fort's eastern side features steps leading down to the Chenab River, which remain remarkably well-preserved despite being constructed in the 18th century. These ghats held great significance for the local population, serving as a sacred site for religious rituals. The turrets, or Burj, still stand intact, with one being named the Kishore Singh Burj in honor of Maharaja Gulab Singh's father, a close associate of Guru Gobind Singh, the 10th Sikh Guru. The fort's walls also bear traces of ancient paintings, a testament to its rich cultural heritage.
