Awantipora

The ancient town of Avantipura was founded by King Avantivarman, a Hindu ruler of the Utpala dynasty, who reigned over Kashmir from 855 to 883 AD. Before ascending to the throne, Avantivarman built the Avantisvamin Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, in Awantipora. Later, during his reign, he constructed the Avantisvara Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Both temples were built in spacious rectangular courtyards and showcased exquisite architecture. Unfortunately, they were destroyed in the Middle Ages, but were later excavated by archaeologist Daya Ram Sahni in the early 20th century, unveiling their historical significance and cultural heritage.
