Stok Festival

The Stok Guru Tsechu Festival is a unique and ancient tradition celebrated in Ladakh's Stok village, near Leh. The festival dates vary annually, coinciding with Guru Padmasambhava's birthday. Two of Ladakh's seven oracles manifest through chosen individuals, who undergo a month-long retreat without meat. On the festival day, the oracles enter a trance, dance on monastery rooftops in white costumes, and make predictions for the year. Villagers offer prayers, Chang (rice beer), and Tsampa (roasted barley flour), seeking guidance. Unlike other Indian festivals, photography is restricted, making it a rare privilege to witness this tradition. The festival showcases the rise of Buddhism in Ladakh through the vanquishing of demons, offering a glimpse into the region's rich history and culture. The event is a rare opportunity to experience an ancient oracular tradition, making it a unique and unforgettable experience.
