Ice Hockey (Gupuk Lake) in Phe

Ladakh, known for its natural beauty and spiritual sites, is emerging as a destination for winter sports like ice hockey and skating. The region's frozen lakes and streams create ideal conditions for these sports. Ice hockey, introduced by the Ladakh Scouts Battalion in the 1970s, has grown in popularity despite initial challenges like lack of equipment. Locals used makeshift gear, such as nailing ice skating blades to army boots, and even made pucks from army boot heels. The sport has sustained injuries, but its popularity endures. In 2008, an Indian ice hockey team from Ladakh participated in the Asian Challenge Cup. The region's potential for ice hockey growth is tremendous, with superior snow conditions and frozen streams. Enthusiasm for the sport is increasing, and Ladakh boasts the country's highest ice-skating rink at 3483m above sea level.
