Dal Lake

Dal Lake

Dal Lake, situated in the heart of Srinagar, is a stunning urban lake that embodies the essence of Kashmir's beauty and charm. Dubbed the "Jewel in the crown of Kashmir" or "Srinagar's Jewel," this majestic lake is a hub for tourism, recreation, and commercial activities like fishing and water plant harvesting.
The lake's shoreline, spanning 15.5 kilometers, is adorned with a picturesque boulevard, Mughal-era gardens, parks, houseboats, and hotels. The scenic views of the lake can be savored from the shoreline Mughal gardens, such as Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh, built during the reign of Mughal Emperor Jahangir, as well as from houseboats cruising along the lake in vibrant shikaras.
During the winter season, the lake sometimes freezes due to temperatures reaching as low as -11°C (12°F). The lake covers an area of 18 square kilometers and is part of a natural wetland spanning 21.1 square kilometers, including its floating gardens. These gardens, known as "Raad" in Kashmiri, bloom with lotus flowers in July and August.
The wetland is divided into four basins: Gagribal, Lokut Dal, Bod Dal, and Nagin (which is sometimes considered an independent lake). Lokut-dal and Bod-dal each have an island in the center, known as Rup Lank (or Char Chinari) and Sona Lank, respectively.
Houseboats are an integral part of Dal Lake, offering cozy accommodations to tourists in Srinagar. With its breathtaking beauty, rich history, and cultural significance, Dal Lake is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Kashmir.
