Panchvaktar Temple: A Sacred Shrine Steeped in History
Constructed by Raja Guje Singh of Jammu (1687-1703), the Panchvaktar Temple is one of the oldest and most revered Shiva shrines in Jammu. Its significance is deeply rooted in the visit of Shankaracharya in the ninth century AD, and the self-originated Shivalinga (Svayambhuva Shiva linga) makes it a sacred destination. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva in his Swachananda form, depicted with five faces, representing the totality of Shiva in his most abstract form.
The temple's unique features include coins embedded in the floor slabs, earning it the popular name 'Rupay wala mandir'. Additionally, inscriptions in Dogri script once adorned the exterior walls, adding to its historical significance. Located in a lane off Residency Road, just a kilometer from Raghunath Bazaar, this ancient temple is a must-visit for spiritual seekers and history enthusiasts alike."
