Parihaspura

Parihaspura

The Parhaspora temple complex, situated 13 miles from Srinagar, was built by King Lalitaditya (c. AD 750) as part of his new capital city. The site features three structures: a stupa, monastery, and chaitja. The stupa, built by Lalitaditya’s minister Chankuna, has a massive base with smooth limestone blocks and fine joints. The monastery, or rajavihara, is a quadrangle with 26 cells, a courtyard, and a colonnade. Excavations have uncovered various architectural elements, including carved atlantes, trefoiled arches, and stone drains. A silver coin hoard was discovered in one of the cells, dating back to the time of kings Vinayaditya, Vigraha, and Durlabha. The complex showcases the region’s rich cultural heritage and architectural excellence. Despite being in ruins, the Parhaspora temple complex remains an important historical and archaeological site, offering insights into Kashmir’s ancient past.
