Wangath Temple Complex

The Wangath Temple complex, situated in the Wangath village of Ganderbal district, Jammu and Kashmir, is a group of ancient Shiva temples. Built by LalitadityaMuktapida in the 8th century AD, the complex lies near Naranag, amidst a dense pine forest and the Harmukh Mountains. According to the Rajatarangini chronicle, King Ashoka’s son, Jaluka, constructed the initial temple in 220 BC, with a stone structure added in 137 BC. Later, King Avanti Varman built a stone pedestal And silver conduit for the idols’ bathing. The temple, originally known as Sodaratirth, was part of the ancient Vasisht Ashram. Despite being plundered by Mughal kings, the temple complex remains a significant historical and religious site, showcasing the region’s rich cultural heritage. Its scenic location and architectural significance make it a notable destination for tourists and devotees alike.
