Alchi Monastery

Alchi, a picturesque village in Ladakh, is situated 70 km west of Leh on the banks of the River Indus. The village is known for its ancient monastery, Alchi Monastery, built between 958 AD and 1055 AD by Guru Rinchen Zangpo. The monastery is a significant cultural heritage site and a center of Buddhist learning, managed by the monks of Likir. The complex features several temples, including Sumtsek, Vairocana, and Manjushree, with stunning wood carvings, Tibetan-style Buddha models, and historic wall paintings. The Choskor temple complex has five shrines with impressive wall paintings, including one with thousands of miniature Buddha images. Alchi's isolation has preserved its cultural traditions, making it an ideal destination to experience authentic Buddhist heritage and serene ambiance. The village's natural beauty, with apricot trees and the Indus River, adds to its charm, making it a must-visit destination in Ladakh.
