The site is believed to be a Shakti Peeth because, according to Puranic tradition, the right hand of Goddess Sati fell here, making it a sacred pilgrimage destination for Hindus. Before 1947, devotees from Kashmir regularly performed rituals for their ancestors at the confluence of the rivers Sindhu and Madhumati near the temple.
