Thiksey Monastery

Thiksey Monastery

Thiksey Monastery, the largest in central Ladakh, is a 12-storey Tibetan Buddhist monastery situated 18 km from Leh. It's famous for its architecture, location, and stunning views of the Indus Valley. The monastery has 10 temples, an assembly hall, and is home to 120 monks and nuns. It's known as 'Mini Potala' due to its resemblance to Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. The monastery features a 40-foot Maitreya statue, Tara temple, and rare artifacts like stupas, statues, thangkas, and swords. Morning prayers attract large crowds, and festivals are a major draw. The monastery offers accommodation and vegetarian food, while nearby hotels provide luxurious amenities and Indian/Tibetan cuisine. The best time to visit is between May and September, before the routes close due to heavy snowfall. Thiksey Monastery's unique history and stunning architecture make it a must-visit destination in Ladakh.
